Nestled in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains is the community of Big Canoe, a premier 8000 acre country club development. Big Canoe's golf course winds through old growth forests and rises to breathtaking mountain tops with stunning views as far as the eye can see. Many of the 27 holes overlook valleys with roaring fresh water mountain streams. It's not unusual to have a gallery of deer watch your best tee shot or meander across the fairway in front of you. There's nothing else like it in North Georgia . It's hard to believe it's only an hour north of Atlanta , one of the ten largest cities in the United States .
The original 18 holes-Creek and Choctaw golf courses-are more traditional in nature. There's none of the drastic elevation changes typical with mountain courses. For a pleasant change of pace, the Cherokee course plays more like what you would expect from a mountain course-a tight shot-placement course (point A to point B) with a lot of elevation change up and down. While none of the three nine hole courses are exceedingly long, a premium is placed on accuracy. One ball out of play brings on the wilds of the old growth forest. There will be a penalty for sure.
When you tee it up on any one of the beautiful courses at Big Canoe, you'll need all of your concentration on each shot, but you can recharge your batteries between shots day-dreaming while looking at the beautiful vistas and views. You can't help but be taken back in time to when the Cherokee Indians lived in harmony with nature in this very same stretch of land criss-crossed with babbling creeks and waterfalls. Indian mounds are scattered throughout the community and surrounding the course.
After playing a round, you can relax and unwind at the Black Bear Pub in the new ten million dollar clubhouse facility which includes a formal dining room overlooking the stunning mountain ranges, a pro shop, a sandwich shop and wonderful service by long time locals who understand the meaning of helping golfers enjoy their Big Canoe experience.
